Southwest Bakersfield contains a substantial amount of residential, commercial, and industrial areas as well as parks, shopping, and even California State University. Most of the land in the area was owned by Kern County Land Company, which later became Tennaco West, and is now known as Castle and Cooke. Growth in the southwest started in the early 1950's and accelerated in between the 1960's and 1980's. The area is bounded by the Kern River to the north, State Hwy 99 to the east, Taft Hwy to the south and Interstate 5 to the west. Some of the neighborhoods located in the southwest area include Stockdale Estates, Seven Oaks, Laurelglen, Campus Park, Silvercreek, and Southern Oaks just to name a few.
